Can I take Viagra if I am on PrEP?

Does one little blue pill go with the other?

Viagra is one of the brand names of a drug called sildenafil. Generally it is safe to take sildenafil with Truvada or generic Truvada as PrEP. [1]

Truvada is made up of two drugs, Tenofovir and Emtricitabine. Both are a ‘class’ of drugs called Nucleoside analog reverse-transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs). NRTIs don’t interact with sildenafil It is a good idea however to talk to your doctor about the kinds of medications you’re taking.

What about other HIV medications?

Truvada is one kind of drug that’s used to treat HIV as well as prevent it. There are other kinds of HIV treatment medications too. If you are HIV-positive and take other HIV treatment medications there may be interactions between those medications and sildenafil. Some drug classes’ like protease inhibitors (PIs) and Non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NNRTIscan interact with sildenafil - especially HIV medicines that use the protease inhibitor ritonivir (Norvir) as a 'booster’.

The most common side-effects of sildenafil are headaches, facial flushing, indigestion, nasal congestion, transient disturbance of colour vision and raised blood pressure. For people on those HIV treatment drugs, this may make side effects worse, dangerously so. That said, some people on those HIV medications can still take Viagra or Cialis but at a different dose. If you are HIV-positive and plan to take Viagra or Cialis [2], you should talk to your doctor.

Viagra and other substances…

Sildenafil should not be taken in conjunction with nitrates, including amyl nitrite (poppers) or drugs used to treat angina. If nitrates and sildenafil are taken together, blood pressure may fall to dangerously low levels.

So, to recap – PrEP and Viagra fine, HIV medication and Viagra - talk to your doctor. For a list of drug interactions with various HIV treatment drugs, including Emtracitabine and Tenofivir as used in PrEP check out HIV-Druginteractions.org

Viagra and other substances…

It’s also worth noting that unlike buying from a recommended PrEP supplier like on PAN - it’s easy to unknowingly buy counterfeit Viagra and Cialis online. If you buy counterfeit erectile drugs online, anything could be in them and it’s therefore hard to tell what it might interact with. Viagra is really cheap in Australia, about $2 a tablet, so we’d recommend buying your erectile medications locally rather than online. If you do buy online, use a reputable supplier.
