HOW TO TAKE PREP

Are you here for a good time, not a long time?

A once-a-day pill is how most of us a familiar with taking PrEP. However, if your sex adventures happen here or there - or you've got a filthy fun holiday planned - you might not need to take PrEP daily, but can make it work for you in other ways.

DAILY PREP

Daily PrEP is the way most people are familiar with PrEP. This provides all-round 24/7 protection. No matter what you're getting up to, you know you're covered.

How do we know it works?

There are plenty of clinical research studies that tell us that PrEP works. Studies like iPergay, PROUD and iPrex have proven that when taken daily PrEP gives you powerful protection against HIV.

When to take it?

Daily PrEP is good option for a lot of folks. Getting action on the regular? Awesome! This will take the guess work out of keeping you protected against HIV. Had your pill each morning? You're covered!

WHEN NOT to take it?

Is the sex you're having:

  • Only with your regular partner?
  • With HIV-undetectable partners?
  • Using condoms?
  • Not frequent?

...or, has your doctor said that your kidneys or bone density might be an issue?

In that case daily PrEP might not be for you, or the only way for you to take PrEP.

Start up

7 Pills: Once you've taken a single pill once a day for a full week, you've got great coverage you need! Think of it as taking a run up before diving in. Now, go get wet!

Keep on Keepin' on

1 Pill: Just keep taking your PrEP once a day. You can take PrEP with or without food, and at any time of the day - just keep it up!

i'm Done!

28 Pills: Had enough of PrEP? No stress. You can stop daily PrEP - just keep it up for 28 days without any sexy times where you aren't protected by condoms or UVL. You can start daily PrEP again if you need - that's easy, just repeat the process!

Who is it for?

Daily PrEP works for everyone, regardless of the kind of sex you are having. If you're having receptive vaginal/front-hole sex be careful not to miss your daily dose (those bits need more protection).

If you're just having butt sex - you can miss a dose here or there, just make sure you're taking 4+ pills per week. For other kinds of sex you need to make sure to take it every day.

ON DEMAND PrEP

This name applies to a PrEP regime where people only take their PrEP  around one 'event' (aka a really fun night).

How do we know it works?

The Ipergay study is the only study we know of that has specifically looked at taking PrEP this way, but we know from other studies where people kept up their dose to 4 or more pills, that they were well protected.

When?

Not at risk usually but want to have a filthy weekend away? Rock on! This might work for you.

If you're not taking PrEP daily, but you know you're planning to have sex withing 24 hours (got a hook up planned?) then this is a great way to get covered.

WHEN NOT?

If you're hooking up RIGHT NOW (or in the next 2 hours) you may not get full coverage - so keep this for times when you've got a bit of notice.

Start up

2 Pills to double down! Between 2-24 hours before you're planning to have sex, take two PrEP pills - with or without food.

Keep on Keepin' on

1 Pill: Bang on! Take a single pill the following day, at the same time you took your first dose.

i'm Done!

1 pill: Take a final single pill the next day, at the same time you took yesterday's dose. You're finished!

WHAT IF...?

You got lucky again, or your session went into the next day? Good on you (hope it was a blast!) Just tack on an extra single pill for one more day. When you stop you should have had two sex free days where you have taken PrEP.

And What About...?

PrEP drugs also treat hepatitis B - so if you stop start your PrEP you might run into some issues with viral flare ups. If that's you - chat to your doctor!

Who is it for?

If you're having receptive vaginal/front-hole sex then you won't have the best protection you need from On Demand. Daily PrEP will be the best way to keep you covered.

4 x PrEP -OR- The T's and S's

"4 Pill Per Week PrEP" or "The T's and S's" applies to a PrEP regime where people take their PrEP consistently, but just 4 times per week - rather than daily.

It's different to On Demand PrEP. You don't need to take it based around a sex event - just remember the T's and S's (Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday, Sunday)

How do we know it works?

From studies of PrEP that have happened all over the world, we know that PrEP works. Daily PrEP provides the best protection you can have, but 4+ pills per weeks is also incredibly effective.

When?

Does daily PrEP upset your kidney function, or have bone density issues? Less PrEP will be effective, but kinder on your body,

Do you want to stretch out how long your PrEP lasts?

Do you just simply forget your PrEP some days?

The T's and S's might work for you!

WHEN NOT?

If you're only taking four pills a week, you have less wriggle room. If you forget one of those 4 doses in the week, you're starting to lose protection (however you can shift to one of your 'off' days - like Wednesday!). If you're forgetful a reminder app, or keeping a little pill tray handy might keep you on track.

Start up

7 Pills: Get in the game with 7 pills. One each day for a week. This is the same as for Daily PrEP.

Keep on Keepin' on

4 Pills: Four pills per week, perhaps on T and S days (Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday, Sunday) - but really, on any days that work for you. If you're forgetful, Keep a reminder in your phone or download an app!

i'm Done!

28 Pills: Look, we don't really have the data on this one - but we would suggest winding down just like with Daily PrEP - for 28 days. Just take 28 days worth of daily PrEP with no unprotected sex in the meantime! Want to start it up again, cool - just repeat the same process.

Who is it for?

If you're having receptive vaginal/front-hole sex then you won't have the best protection you need. Daily PrEP will be the best way to keep you covered. If it's just for those having butt sex, you're all good to go!

Holiday PREP

Holiday PrEP  is for... exactly what it sounds like. A holiday you take PrEP for. You take your PrEP daily for the period you're at risk, say while you're on holiday, but you gear up with a week before you leave, and bookend with a week afterward.

How do we know it works?

From studies of PrEP that have happened all over the world, we know that PrEP works. Daily PrEP provides the best protection you can have, but 4+ pills per weeks is also incredibly effective. This is the same great daily PrEP protection, but short term.

When?

Planning a filthy sex holiday! Sounds fun, got a spare ticket for us? If you're just getting down and dirty over that period, you might want to take PrEP while you're there.

Also a good idea if you're heading to a country with high HIV rates.

WHEN NOT?

If you haven't taken PrEP before - right before you go on holiday could be a tricky time. Make sure you try it out before you leave, and stay in touch with your doctor.

Start up

7 Pills. One pill a day for 7 days. This is what we know works for Daily PrEP, so we'd recommend getting started with 7 Pills over the course of a week.

Keep on Keepin' on

1 Pills. Just keep up your one pill a day till you're home - or finished up.

i'm Done!

7 Pills.  Finish up with 7 extra days of PrEP after your holiday/event.

WHAT IF...?

Something happens while you're away? Concerned about side effects? Allow yourself a bit of time to get used to PrEP before you leave if you haven't taken it before.

Who is it for?

Holiday PrEP will work for anal as well as front-hole sex too! Because you're taking it daily you've got awesome protection.
